Correcting Your Name on Your Bangladesh NID Card
A name error on your National ID card can cause significant problems — from being denied banking services to passport application complications. Fortunately, the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) has a defined process to correct name errors on your NID card, both online and offline.
Common Name Errors on NID Cards
Name errors on NID cards typically fall into these categories:
- Spelling mistakes in the English or Bangla name
- Missing or extra parts of a name (e.g., missing middle name)
- Name mismatch between English and Bangla versions
- Incorrect father's or mother's name
- Name change after marriage (for women)
Documents Required for Name Correction
Before applying, gather the following documents:
- SSC/HSC Certificate — Shows your official registered name
- Birth Certificate — Original copy
- Passport (if available) — As supporting evidence
- Marriage Certificate — If correcting name after marriage
- Court affidavit — For significant name changes
- Newspaper notification — For legal name changes

- Fill out the form with the correct name information.
- Attach all required supporting documents (photocopies and originals).
- Submit the form to the officer and collect a receipt.
- Pay the prescribed fee at the designated bank or counter.
How Long Does Name Correction Take?
Processing times vary based on the type of correction and current workload at the Election Commission:
| Correction Type | Estimated Processing Time |
|---|---|
| Minor spelling correction | 7–15 working days |
| Significant name change | 20–30 working days |
| Father/Mother name correction | 15–25 working days |
After Approval: Getting Your Updated NID
Once the correction is approved, you can download your updated digital NID from the portal. A new physical Smart NID card will be issued and delivered or available for collection at your local EC office.
Important: Always keep copies of your application and receipt until you receive your corrected NID card.
